When she and Oscar, married 12 Dec 1871, migrated to Nebraska, they borrowed a fast horse from their good friends the Cathers (Willa Cather's Uncle and Aunt) to run in the race to stake their claim for homesteading. She and Oscar had eight children; Elma (lost at 13), Lillian Dell (Whitney), Franc Millicent (Lea), Otterbein Elroy Jr., adopted son George B., and three children lost in infancy.
