Warren Mathis LOCKNEY -Warren Dee (Red) Mathis, 77, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 6, 2013, in Lockney. Funeral services will be held on today, April 9, at 2:30 p.m. at the West College & Third Church of Christ in Lockney. Visitation was held on Monday, April 8, from 6-8 p.m. at the Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Lockney. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Lockney. Warren Dee Mathis was born at home near Cordell, Okla,. on April 25, 1935, to David Blackburn Mathis and Agnes Mae (Warren) Mathis. He was the fourth of five children. The family moved to a farm near South Plains, Texas, at the end of 1941. Warren attended school at South Plains and Providence, then graduated from Lockney High School in 1953. He was married to Barbara Joan Carthel on June 3, 1955. After they married, Warren and Barbara resided and farmed in Hale County. He was a good steward of the land, farming wheat, corn and cotton. He was always optimistic. They moved to Providence in 1968 and still reside there. A local businessman once said after an early freeze and hail storm, "That Warren Mathis beats all I ever saw - he thinks everything is going to be alright." Warren could always tell what the problem was and was able to see how to fix it. He was famous for the wonderful sweet corn he grew - and was known for picking it, shucking and cleaning it, and delivering it to friends who could not come and get it. Warren had a knack for recognizing a good business opportunity and acting on it. Warren loved his family, farming and friends. He always wanted to keep his family close and having fun together. He was passionate about classic Chevys, John Deere and good food. Warren has been known to offer unsolicited advice, especially to basketball referees. He even offered to loan a ref his glasses during one exciting game. His legacy will continue through his wife, Barbara, of the home; his children, Mike and Ginger Mathis, D'Lyn and Lindan Morris, and Karen and Aaron Wilson, all of Lockney. Grandchildren are Kaci and Kodi Scott of Lubbock, Lindsey and Jeff Griffith of Amarillo, Garrett and Lindsie Mathis of Lockney, Kirk and Brittney Wilson of Lubbock, Brance Wilson of Lubbock, Trevor Morris of Amarillo, Tanner Morris and his fianceé Kaci Boedeker of Lockney and Bethany Wilson of Lubbock. Great-grandchildren are Caden, Carley and Caragen Griffith of Amarillo, Laney and Mason Scott of Lubbock, Evelyn and Brody Mathis of Lockney and Jill Wilson of Lubbock. He is also survived by his sister, Jan Louise Heard of Clovis, N.M., and many nieces and nephews and many, many friends. He will be sorely missed. Warren was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John Wesley "Jigger" Mathis, Leo Ordell Mathis; a sister, Glenna Mae Mathis; granddaughter April Ann Morris and great-granddaughter Kaylee Madison Scott.
