John L. Stewart was born on December 29, 1843, in Johnson County, Arkansas to S. B. Stewart, of Tennessee, and Elizabeth W. Matthews, of Alabama. After moving to Texas in 1854, Stewart fought for the Confederacy in Company H, Baylor's Dismounted Cavalry in Kirby Smith's Division of the Trans-Mississippi Army.
After the war, Stewart settled in Tahoka, Lynn County, where he was a stockraiser. On December 18, 1923, Stewart was admitted in to the Texas Confederate Home, where he listed himself as a widower and a Christian. In total, he was admitted to the Home three different times, the last being November 8, 1930. Stewart died on February 18, 1939.
