His wife Margaret was from Camden Co., GA. She died in 1869 and is buried in the Old City Cemetery.

Col. Broward was very active in politics and local government and was a major land holder in north Duval County. He even served on the Florida Senate in 1850's. There is a ledger from 1857 which lists the names of his 88 slaves.

He was the grandfather of Florida Governor, Napolean B. Broward.

BROWARD, John
Jacksonville FLORIDA UNION
18 November 1865.
"It is with deep regret we have to announce the death of Colonel John Broward, of Duval county, which sad event took place at his Cedar Creek residence on the morning of the 14th instant; aged 70 years and 7 days, Colonel Broward has been long well known to the people of East Florida, as a most exemplary and public spirited citizen." (Source: Electronic: FLORIDA DEATH & MARRIAGE NOTICES extracted from old newspapers and posted by Dale Johnson.)

NOTE: some records show his death date as 28 May 1869 - this was a misunderstanding in reading the probate documents. Probate began January 1866 and a few years later, his widow, died. She died in May 1869. This is the root cause of the inconsistent reporting of his death date.
