He was born Sept. 19, 1909, to Freeman L. and Elsie Mae McKinley Reed at Greer. He attended school there and at Fraser.
He then worked as a firefighter in the Selway-Bitterroot area and fought the big fire of 1934. He later worked as a logger in that area.
He married Mary A. Kopczynski July 2, 1939.
During World War II, he helped build Farragut Naval Station on Lake Pend Oreille.
The couple made their home at Cottonwood after the war. Along with his brothers-in-law Jake and Stan Kopczynski, he owned and operated City Electric Service. He was a plumber and electrician.
He retired because of health reasons in 1978 and the couple remained in Cottonwood.
He was a 34-year member of the Cottonwood Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire chief for nine years. He helped organize the Cottonwood Rural Fire District.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Cottonwood.
He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing and driving around the area. He also liked woodworking, and he and his wife enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife at the couple's Cottonwood home; two sons, David Reed of Sacramento, Calif., and James Reed of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Judy Reed of Boise, Peggy Dorf of Grangeville and Miriam Hansen of Seattle; a brother, Kenneth Stockard of Kamiah; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Patricia Reed; two sisters, Beulah Walker and Florence Grove; and two brothers, Frank and Dick Stockard.
Vigil and rosary service will be held at 7:45 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Cottonwood. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's with the Rev. Joseph Muha of St. Mary's as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery.
