WAPELLO, Iowa - J. Maxine Thornton, 81, Wapello, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the Church of the Nazarene, Wapello. The Rev. Brent Smith will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by John Zippe and Shirley McCord. Cremation will follow with burial to be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, at the Grandview Cemetery, Grandview. Visitation is noon-7 p.m. today at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. A memorial fund has been established for the Wapello Rescue Unit.

Mrs. Thornton was born April 6, 1923, in Seymore, the daughter of Clifford and Wilma (Brown) Thackery. She was first married to Gordon Followwill. He preceded her in death July 5, 1968. She married Harry 'Bud' Thornton Dec. 30, 1977, in Fredonia. She graduated from Numa High School, Numa. She worked as a dietitian at the Osteopathic Hospital, Davenport. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Wapello, and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She loved her gardening and house plants and her small animals. She enjoyed people and being able to go along wherever Bud was playing music. Survivors include her husband, Harry ‘Bud'; a daughter, Nancy Sabel of Slaughters, Ky.; two grandsons, Tom Wade and Preston Chambers; five great-grandchildren; four stepdaughters, LaVonee Powell of Hampton, Ill., Donna Dickey of Wapello, Judy Wykert of Oakville and Pattie Verbille of DeWitt; seven stepgrandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren; and a brother, Orval Thackery of Geneseo, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Gordon; three sisters; and a brother.
