William James ‘Bill' Sellers, 90, of Atchison, KS passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow, at 3:00 PM, in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorials in honor of Mr. Sellers are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Scholarship Fund or the Salvation Army and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Bill was born February 4, 1923 in Cherokee County, KS the son of Virgil and Hazel (Dobelbower) Sellers. He attended school in Cherokee County graduating from Columbus High School in 1940. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Pittsburg, KS. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Combat Engineers in the European Theatre. He attended Kansas State College in Pittsburg, now known as Pittsburg State University, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in teaching in 1949 and later his Master's Degree. Bill taught math and science at Lamar, MO and Washington High School before becoming the Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent of Atchison Public Schools. He retired on July 1, 1988. Bill was the President of the Local Teacher's Association of the Washington High School District in Kansas City, KS, past President of Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics and past President of the Kansas Association of School Business Officials. He was a member of the Atchison Kiwanis Club, having served as President, Treasurer and Lt. Governor of the Kansas District. Bill was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served in several capacities including, Chairman of the Education Committee, Chairman of the Congregation, Elder and Chairman of the Board of Elders Committee. He had also been on the Atchison Area United Way Board for 30 years, served on the Salvation Army Board and the Happy Hears Board. Bill was a member of the Pineview Country Club and worked with the Volunteer Income Tax program for 21 years after retirement.

Bill married Bernice Elizabeth Grotheer on October 2, 1949 in Pittsburg, KS. Bernice preceded Bill in death on February 8, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lee R. Sellers.

Survivors include a son, James W. (Carolyn) Sellers, Hartland, WI; two daughters, Janice S. Sellers, Topeka, KS: Judith A. (David) Green , Charlotte NC; three grandchildren, Will (Kailey) Green, Ellie Green and Parker Sellers and a sister, Ella Davis, Bella Vista, AR.
