Reuben Bafus was born in Endicott, WA, to George and Katherine Bafus who were Volga German immigrants. In 1927, the family moved to an 80 acre farm near Camas, WA. Reuben grew up here, taking over much of the farmwork as he grew into a young man.

In the early 1950s, Reuben began working at Crown Zellerbach's paper mill, ultimately as a lab technician in Central Research Division. At this time he also met the love of his life, Mary Jane Weigel, at the Oaks Park Roller Rink in Portland, Oregon. They married on Dec. 5, 1953, and raised their family on the same farm in Camas.

Reuben was an avid student of the weather. He collected daily statistics at the farm for 50 years, and out-shone professional forecasters with his accuracy. Reuben also enjoyed playing chess and bowling. In the 1970s, he earned a realtor's and broker's license as well as writing a column in the Camas Post Record.

Reuben was known not only for his strong work ethic but also for his wry sense of humor. He retired after 34 years with Crown Zellerbach in 1985.

Reuben is survived by his wife Mary; and three children, George Bafus of Camas, Brenda Bafus-Williams of Montrose, CO and Ruby Hinds of Bellingham, WA; five granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and his sister, Esther Ochs of Camas.
Reuben was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Martin of Camas.

A memorial service was held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens at 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2013.
