Born September 19, 1930 in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late King David and Sudie Newton Bennett. He was married to Shelvia Jean Warwick Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a retired supervisor from Galey & Lord in Society Hill and was currently employed with Wal-Mart of Rockingham. He was a life-time member of Boykin United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir. Mr. Bennett loved football. He was a devoted Gamecock fan and supported the Marlboro County Bulldogs.
Mr. Bennett dearly loved his family. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Mrs. Shelvia Jean Bennett of Bennettsville; his sons, James "Jim" Bennett (Brenda) of Bennettsville and Donald Ray Odom ( Connie) of Florence; his daughters, Marilyn Bennett Collins (Larry) of Bennettsville; Sylvia Odom Brown (Durward) of Myrtle Beach; Cathy Odom Landis (Jerry) of Mt. Pleasant; Wanda Gail Odom Allen of Florence and Melinda Odom Stanley of Florence; his sister, Rachel Bennett Turner of Spartanburg; his grandchildren, Holly, Wendy, Christopher, Jennifer, Brad, Blake, Daniel, Lea, Ramsey and Tyler; his great-grandchildren; Stephen, Kenji, Takeshi, Jeremy, Jaden and Ila; and many other beloved family members and friends.
Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, listed above; a brother, Joe Bennett and a sister, Edna Bennett Skym.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Boykin United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Newton Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Burroughs Cooper Kiser Funeral Home.
