Civil War: Company I, 3rd California Infantry


Pliny Allen enlisted for a period of three years at Mokelumne Hill, California, October 2, 1861, and was mustered into Company I, 3rd California Infantry, October 3. He was appointed as a Corporal on Nov 30, 1861, and promoted to Sergeant on April 25, 1862. Sgt. Allen was posted to the Utah Territory where he was mustered out at Camp Douglas on October 4, 1864 (Orton, p. 585) by reason of expiration of term of service. His enlistment records describe him as being age 33 at the time of enlistment, born at Turner, Maine and a miner by occupation. He is 6' 1/2" tall, with a dark complexion, dark hair, and hazel eyes.


After the war he returned to Maine and married Sarah J. Bradbury. Pliny Allen was a member Portland's Bosworth Post, No. 2, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Portland August 28, 1895, and received application No. 1,169,814 and certificate No. 899,978. (WPA grave registration card in Maine Archives)


Obituary:

Pliny Allen, aged 84 years, died Sunday at Turner at the home of his daughter. He was a veteran of the Civil War having served in the third California cavalry (sic), was a member of Bosworth Post of Portland and employed by Legrow Bros., lumber dealers, in that city for many years. He was born in Turner. Aside from his daughter the only near relative is a brother, Jesse R. Allen, who lives in Portland.
