Lynford E. Hormann was born August 1, 1925 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was born to Ernest and Dora Hormann. He had six brothers: Kenneth, Marvis, Merle, Lyle, Donald, and Eugene, and three sisters: Lee, Loretta, and Vi. He attended an Aberdeen Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1943. He was interested in sports, especially baseball. While he was in high school, he worked at the Aberdeen American News.

Lynford entered the service at Fort Snelling in Minnesota at the age of 18 on November 23, 1943. He received training at Camp Blanding, Florida and Fort Mead, Maryland. On July 23, 1944, he was sent overseas to France, where he was stationed in the town of Sees.

Private Lynford Hormann died in Sees, France on August 19, 1944, shortly after turning 19. The circumstances surrounding his death are unknown. The body was sent back stateside for burial at Riverside Memorial cemetery in Aberdeen, South Dakota on September 10, 1948. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously on October 13, 1944.

Current survivors include: Kenneth Hormann in Whittier, California; Marvis Hormann in Perry, Iowa; Lyle Hormann in Redfield, South Dakota; Eugene Hormann in Aberdeen, South Dakota; Lee Hormann Labesky in Aberdeen, South Dakota; Loretta Hormann Hauck in Aberdeen, South Dakota; and Vi Hormann in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
