D/o Margaret Handley (Walker) and Thomas Jefferson Harvey.

Parents were married 1828 in Monroe county, (then Virginia) West Virginia. They started their family there and then migrated first to Indiana and then on to Adams county, Illinois.

In 1850 (census as source) the family was living in Beverly, Adams county, Illinois with 9 children listed: Mary J, James M, John A, George G, Martha E, Joseph E, twins Scott and Taylor, and Emily (Emma). The parents died shortly thereafter; Margaret in 1851 and Thomas in 1852. It's not clear what happened to all the children after the parents died.

In 1860 (census as source) Emma was living in Beverly, Illinois with her elder sister Mary Jane who had married into the William Cutter family. By 1870, they had moved to Davis, Kansas where Emma continued to live with the Cutter family; she's listed as Keeping House in the census of that year. Emma's brother James Madison Harvey became the fifth governor of Kansas (1869--1873) after serving in the Kansas House of Representatives for two years (1865-66) and the state senate in 1867.
