The Speer Burial Ground was originally part of the DeMott family estate in the mid-late 1600s. Albert Speer, who was an undertaker in Jersey City, purchased the land in 1857 and made it a public cemetery. No records were ever kept and the cemetery is in disarray. The last interrments occured during World War I. In the 1970s efforts were made to restore the cemetery, but they were never seen through.
