She was born in Wilmington November 8, 1919, the daughter of Louise Worth and Benjamin Mills Washburn, Jr. Mrs. Boylan was among the first students to attend Forest Hills Elementary School, graduated from New Hanover High School in 1936, and, in 1938, from Arlington Hall in Arlington, VA.
In January, 1945, she married her high school classmate, George S. Boylan, then a Lt. Colonel in the Army Air Corps. Her southern charm, graciousness and modest demeanor proved to be invaluable assets, as she loyally supported him during his travels and duties as a career Air Force officer.
Mrs. Boylan and her husband returned to Wilmington in 1974. She spent time renewing old acquaintances, enjoying the surf at the Carolina Yacht Club, puttering in the garden, playing bridge and attacking the daily crossword puzzle. For many years she was an active member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and could be found until recently on most Sundays rooted in the "family" pew. She was the most generous, caring and selfless mother one could hope to have.
Lt. General Boylan died in 2004 and her younger brother, Col. Benjamin M. Washburn III, USAF, also predeceased her.
She is survived by her children, George W. Boylan and his wife, Cynthia, of Wilmington, and Louise W. Boylan, of Alexandria, VA. Also surviving are her nephews and their families, Benjamin M. Washburn IV, of Lexington Park, MD, Jonathan W. Washburn, of Wilmington, and Michael W. Washburn, of Raleigh.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 28 at 2 PM, followed by burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
