She was born on Nov. 27, 1930, in Ware, Mass., the daughter of the late Albert and Bernice (Gurka) Calkins. She graduated from High School in Newport, and married Eltheron "Larry" Whitman in 1948.
Eleanor held many positions during her working career. She was a nurse's assistant in Massachusetts and upon moving to the area she delivered newspapers for the Morning Sentinel, cleaned rooms for Lovely's Motel and was also a care giver for the elderly in their homes.
In her younger years she enjoyed square dancing and served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed singing and yodeling. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pittsfield.
She is survived by her sons, Gary Whitman, and wife Linda, John Whitman and wife Marie, and James Whitman and wife Virginia, all of Pittsfield; grandchildren Eric Whitman, who she raised as her son, and his wife, Hope, Bonnie Richards and significant other, Frank, Matthew Whitman and significant other, Corianne, Amey Whitman and significant other, Jim, John Whitman Jr., David Whitman, Lisa Whitman and significant other, Josh, and Tasha Smith and husband Chris; many great-grandchildren; and a brother, Larry Calkins.
She was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, Eltheron "Larry" Whitman; brother Charles Calkins; and a granddaughter, Sarah Whitman
