John Douglas "Ducky" Pickett, 82 years, of Sturgeon Bay, died very peacefully surrounded by his children Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Golden Living Center-Dorchester.
He was born August 4, 1930 in Illinois, the son of the late John Alphonso and Blanche Isabelle (Robinson) Pickett. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1947 until June 30, 1975. Ducky entered military service in 1947 as an enlisted rank and retired an officer in the United States Navy. His decorated career took him through tours in Korea and three 18 month tours in Vietnam. He was trained in Submarine engineering upon entering the Navy at New London, Connecticut, and was an engine man in the U.S. Submarine Fleet, serving on diesel submarines then eventually was trained for the nuclear submarine technology. In 1955 he served as Recruiter Duty Specialist. In 1958 he trained with Nuclear Power Training, NPTU, at West Milton, NY. 1959 had him start his NPT, PNROO, US AEC, in Pittsburg, PA. Ducky trained Prototype S3G, Submarine reactor cooler training. He did a seven year tour in San Diego , CA on aircraft carriers and a two year tour in Dunoon, Scotland on the USS Simon Lake.
In 1972 he moved to Sturgeon Bay to work at the Navy Shipbuilding offices here as Quality Assurance Superintendent and retired in 1975 from active duty. From that point on Ducky worked as an independent contractor for a consulting group that eventually became Mono Pump Group until his retirement in 1998. He then lived to spoil his dear grandchildren. Ducky was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in December of 2012.
He was a lifetime member of the NRA, Door County Rod and Gun Club, and loved shooting and reloading ammunition. Ducky was a history buff, and liked watching old classic movies. He was also a lifetime member of Submarines Veterans Association, VFW life member and VFW Post #5877 Savannah River Post.
Survivors include his daughters, Mary (Dan) Pickett-Fulwiler of Algoma, Dorothy (Ron) Pickett-Walker of Kennerville, TX, Margaret Pickett of Green Bay, Kelly (Steve) Pickett-Suhrer of Sturgeon Bay, E.Marie (Sergio) Pickett-Arellano of Collierville, TN; one son, James (Denise) Pickett of Aiken, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Colleen Clarke, Renee Zimmerman, Caitlin Burns, John Michael Arellano, Danielle Fulwiler, David Arellano, Scarlett Suhrer, Violet Suhrer, Willy Arellano, Lilly Suhrer, Smith Suhrer; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa Lopez, Sawyer Clarke, Atlas Clarke, Macie, Katie; one brother, William (Nancy) Pickett of San Diego, CA; sister, Lucille Sullivan of Waterloo, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Catherine (2008), one daughter, Catherine Pickett-Burns; grandson, Brian Geurts, twin infant sons, William Francis and John Alphonso Pickett.
