The Butler Herald newspaper dated Dec 16, 1948, front page

Mr William Marshall Brown, 78, died at his home at Howard at 3:45 o'clock this morning. Mr Brown had been ill for the past three days.
He was born at Howard, May 10, 1870, the son of the late James Marshall and Temperance Brinkley Brown. He spent his entire life in the Howard Community where he was engaged in farming as well as extensive sand pit business. He was a member of the Junction City Baptist Church and was serving on the board of deacons of church at the time of his death. He attended the last meeting of the County Commissioners which was held in Butler the first Tuesday of this month.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Howard Methodist Church Friday morning at eleven o'clock. Rev B E Dunehoo, his former pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the church yard.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs Frances Averette Brown, three sons, Messrs James Brown, Joe Brown, and William M Brown Jr; and two daughters, Mrs M L Parks and Mrs H H Parks, all of Howard; also fifteen grand children and seven great grand children.
