James was Justice of the Peace in 1892 in Summers County West Virginia and again in 1900 in Fayette County.
In 1896 he moved the family to Ramsey County,North Dakota for 1 year where he was deputy sheriff but returned to Fayette County.
In 1905 he bought a home in Oak Hill and was elected mayor he served 3 terms he was also postmaster.
He was a director in the Merchants and
Miners Bank of Oak Hill.
He was mayor of Oak Hill at the time of his death.

He was a Mason and Shriner.
Had a finger cut off from working in a sawmill.
He played fiddle,wife Ella played piano,all his children played a instrument or sang,son Dell played guitar.
Dell Jr. was a recording artist and band leader in the late 1940's and 50's.
Daughter Norma played piano and sang in her church for 35 years and her children and grandchildren have carried on the tradition and love of music.
James "Squire" was a very tall man at 6'4.
1st wife Nancy died Jan 9,1894 Summers County,WV.
of Pneumonia at 32,her parents were
John Alderson Smithson,Sarah Still.Burial unknown.
2nd wife Emma Jones died after giving birth
to Vera she was raised by her grandparents Edwin Trent Jones,Mary Margaret Jameson.
He and Ella Burdette had 2 children,Norma and Clara Faye.
James committed suicide 1 month after his son Emmett died.
Family never really knew why but said he was very distraught after Emmett's death.
Cemetery,1435 East Main St,downtown area,graves left of Lewis mausoleum section D 40 feet out from large pine tree.
