Waverly Journal, Friday, June 17, 1960

J. B. Keplinger, a retired farmer of this community, died of a self inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Waverly about 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 14. His daughter, Mrs. Otis Sims, was a witness to the suicide, but could give no reason for the act. Mr. Keplinger had injured a shoulder recently, but otherwise was not in ill health.
Deceased was born in Bond County March 4, 1872, the son of the late B. F. and Rachel Keplinger, and was 87 years of age.
On August 14, 1895 he was married to Eda Amanda Grinkey, who preceded him in death August 19, 1955.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Otis Sims of Waverly, and Mrs. George Wilton of Medora; a sister, Mrs. Ella Short, of Normal; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Coroner Elmer O. Sample, of Jacksonville conducted an inquest at the Wiese Funeral Home. Death was attributed to a self inflicted wound in the forehead from a 22 calibre rifle.
Burial will be in East cemetery.
