Leslie W. Summers passed away on March 15, 2012 at a Nampa care center with his precious Betty at his side. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary just the day before.
Les was born to Grace and Jake Summers in Niangua, Missouri on November 23, 1918. He was baby brother to three sisters, Hazel, Ruth and Lois. They moved to Caldwell, Idaho when he was 6 and lived there since.
He attended Caldwell schools, the College of Idaho, and the Boise Business University, then briefly worked for Caxton Printers before establishing Summers Office Supply in downtown Caldwell, a business that lasted 53 years. Throughout those years, he worked side by side with his wife Betty, son David, and faithful friend, Archie Stradley.
He was a member of many business and civic organizations in his lifetime. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce beginning in 1943, having served as a director and a past president in 1963. He was active in the Jaycees, having been the state's secretary for a term and in 1971 he was chosen "Boss of the Year". He served for 15 years on the Salvation Army Board and was the director of the Idaho Crippled Children and Adults Easter Seal Society, spending one year as its state president.
He was a member and a president of the Board of Directors of Caldwell Memorial Hospital, now known as West Valley Medical Center, a former member of the alumni board of the College of Idaho, and a former trustee of Boone Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Les was involved in establishing Purple Sage Golf Course. He was a member and past secretary and director of the Caldwell Golf Association and a member of the Idaho Golf Angels.
Les was especially proud to have been a charter member of the Caldwell Centennial band in which he played snare drum for many years.
At the time of his passing he was the longest time member in both Caldwell Rotary Club (69 years) and the Caldwell Elks lodge for 71 uninterrupted years. He served as Caldwell Rotary club's president in 1953-54 and earned Paul Harris Fellows not only for himself, but also for his 2 sons and wife.
Les had a strong faith in the Lord which helped him through the last months of his life. He was a loving faithful husband, family man, and friend to many, and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his three sisters, and their husbands.
Survivors include: wife, Betty; sons, David Summers and Sam (Leora) Summers; granddaughters: Kara (Joe) Aburusa and Kristine (Zack) Turner; and great-grandchildren, Alec and Andy Aburusa.
