Funeral services were held in the Congregational church at Ocheyedan Saturday for Mrs. John J. Stahl, who died at her home there last Wednesday. In critical condition for many months, Mrs. Stahl had been bedfast since Christmas, 1948. She ws 73 years, nine months old at the time of her death.
Mrs. Stahl was born Mary Ann Berends, the oldest child of Fred and Jessie Kruger Berends, at Parkersburg, Iowa, July 19, 1878. She grew to young womanhood in Grundy county and married John J. Stahl at Holland, Iowa, on March 9, 1898.
The couple lived for four years in Grundy county, moved to Dickinson county where they farmed for 19 years - in 1921 - moved to a farm northeast of Ocheyedan where they stayed until retiring to Ocheyedn in 1943.
Four children were born to the couple: Tena, now Mrs. Herman Kruger, Fred; Jessie, now Mrs. art Schuck; and John.
Mrs. stahl and her husband joined Pilgrm Congregatioal church at Ocheyedan on April 1, 1941. Besides her husband and her four children, all residents of Ochdeyedan, mrs. stahl is survived by her mother, Mrs. Jessie Berends, 93, of May City; and six brothers and sisters: Nona Larson, Lake Park; Jake Berends, Harris; Mrs. Lottie Skow, Lake Park, Chris Berends, Harris; Mrs. Dena Hakeman, Harris; and Mrs. Alice Vetter, Lake Park.
Two generations of young people, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, and twelve nephews and nieces also survive.
