Daughter of Josephus Palmer Chase (born 1819 in OH or NY, and his father was likely a Butler) & Irena Laurence Harmon (born 1817 in OH). Ellen was born in Long Grove, IA on October 9, 1853, the 5th of six children. The family moved, by wagon and ox team, to Humboldt Creek in Davis (Geary) county, Kansas in June of 1857. Later her father and eldest brother, George, went to Cripple Creek, CO., in search of gold. While there her father died from an attack of mountain fever and was buried in a miners grave at the foot of Pike's Peak in 1861.

Ellen married John Thomas Hobbs on March 27, 1873 in Davis county, KS at the home of her brother, Flavius Josephus Chase. To this union eight children were born; Charles M., George R., Laura Jane, Walter J., John William, Lottie Mable, Maude Ellen and Clarence A. In 1884 she and her family moved to a farm north of Solomon, where they lived until 1904 when they moved to Solomon. Ellen passed away on July 15, 1941 (Aged 87 years, 9 months, 6 days) and is buried in Prairie Mound cemetery near Solomon, KS.

__________

Humboldt Grange.

Humboldt Grange, No. 1149, held a meeting on the 18th inst., for the election of officers, for the ensuing year. The day was beautiful and the attendance very good. After music, the ladies set a splendid repast, that would have delighted Epicurius himself. After satisfying ourselves with the good things of life, the following officers were elected:

C. B. Stebbins, Master.

Wm. S. Clark, Secretary.

Geo. F. Chase, Lecturer.

C. O. McClernand, Steward.

H. C. Church, Assistant Steward.

F. A. Cobe, Treasurer.

F. Chase, Gatekeeper.

Mrs. Mary J. Chase, Ceres.

Mrs. E. McClernand, Pomona.

Mrs. E. Hobbs, Flora.

The Worthy Lecturer delivered an address that was well received. After some of the Grange business was disposed of we retired to our homes more than satisfied that the Grange is one among the best institutions of the age.

J. T. Hobbs, Master.

C. B. Stebbins, Sec'y.
