In 1860 Eber Compton and his wife purchased 160 acres of land approximately eight miles south of McKinney in what is now known as the Forest Grove community. The Comptons had come from Springfield, Missouri, traveling by ox-drawn wagons. Four very young daughters accompanied the parents to Texas. Their only son John was serving in the Civil War, where he was killed in battle.
