Lewis P. Sullivan was born in 1830 or 1836 in Virginia. He was the son of David and Ellen/Elenor Sullivan and the grandson of the Revolutionary War soldier Peter Sullivan and his wife Catherine (Katy) Earhart. The 1900 Census for Wayne Co. WV lists Lewis Sullivan's birth date as Feb 1835. His Declaration of Pension Papers lists his date of birth as 12 September 1830 and indicates his place of birth was Floyd County KY. The 12 September 1830 date is most likely the correct date because 1) according to his death certificate he was 76 years of age when he died on 26 May 1907 and 2) on his Declaration of Pension papers he stated that his birthday was 12 September 1830. He signed these papers himself. Floyd County KY was most likely the correct place of birth because census records from Floyd County KY show him living with his father there as a small child. Lewis fought in the civil war. He was a private, in Company H, 13th WV Volunteer Infantry and discharged at Wheeling, WV on the 22nd day of June 1865.

Lewis was first married to Lavina/Lavinia (Veen) Smith. Family tradition is that they had 6 boys and 1 daughter, Ida. Upon learning that the children were sick, Lewis left the Civil War battle at Point Pleasant to return home. The boys died from a flu-like illness. The daughter Ida lived. After the boys death, Veen left him.
Lewis (30) then married Anna Liza Blankenship (18). They had a son, Lewis, and a daughter Mary. Anna Liza and her third child died during child birth.
He then married Louisa Meyers. They had 10/11 children.
