Joseph S. 'Joe' Smithey was born January 30, 1875 in Texas, son of William Marson Smithey (1835-1915) and Sadonia Elizabeth Reagan (1841-1910).

The 1880 Federal Census for Precinct 1, Texas (Fannin County) shows Joseph Smithey, age 5, born in Texas; living with his father, William Smithey, a farmer, age 45, born in Illinois; and his mother Elizabeth, age 39, born in Missouri. Also living in the household were Joseph's siblings: James Smithey, age 13, born in Missouri; and Nancy Smithey, age 10, born in Texas.

The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that Joe S. Smithey registered for the draft in Bryan County, Oklahoma on September 12, 1918. He gave his full name; his age as 43; his birthdate as January 30, 1875; his current address as Durant, Oklahoma; his employer as the City of Durant; and his wife, Carrie Smithey of Durant, as his closest relative.

The 1900 Federal Census for Justice Precinct 1, Texas (Fannin County) shows Joe Smithey, a farmer, age 25, born January 1875 in Texas; and his wife, Carrie, age 20, born December 1879 in Texas. The census shows that Joe and Carrie had been married six years and had given birth to three children, of which two were still living. Living with them were two children: John T. Smithey, age 2, born January 1897 in Texas; and Elizabeth B. Smithey, age 6 months, born January 1900 in Texas.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 1, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Joe S. Smithey, a street laborer, age 44, born in Texas; and his wife, Carrie, age 40, born in Texas. Living with them were five children Lizzie (Elizabeth), age 20; Annie M., age 16; Willie age 14; Pearl, age 8; and Lee R., age 5; all born in Texas except Willie who was born in Oklahoma. The family is living next door to Joe and Carrie's married son, John Thomas Smithey, age 22, born in Texas; and his wife, Lizzie, age 22, born in Texas.

Joe died March 16, 1934 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in the Highland Cemetery.

The 1940 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) showed Carrie Smithey, a widow, age 60 born in Texas. Living with her were two of her children: Willie Smithey, age 33, born in Oklahoma; and Lee Smithey, laborer of odd jobs, age 26, born in Texas.

Carrie Belle died in February 1976 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
