Magdalena was born in an area around the province of Lorraine on the French and German border. She was the daughter of Johbn Peter and Mary Ann Frey Courtad. She emigrated to this country with her parents, brothers, and sisters in 1832, being sixty-three days on the ocean. They left ffom Harve, France on board the ship "Logan-Boston" and landed in Baltimore, Maryland. They lived for some time in Pennsylvania. In 1834 they moved from Pennsylvania by wagons for Ohio where they lived until 1841, then moved to Iowa, returning to Ohio in 1844. In 1848 the father (John Peter Courtad) died and is laid to rest in McCutchenville. After his death the mother (Mary Ann Frey Courtad) moved to Sandusky, Ohio, to live with their daughter, Regina. She died in 1853 and is laid to rest in Sandusky, Ohio.
