John and Anna Almdale had only two children. John emigrated from Norway 1912 and went straight to Chicago where he became a mechanic. John (Johan Vilhelm) and his two brothers Earl and Einar decided their surname Petterson was too common, so they changed their last name to Almdale, the name of their family farm back in Stange, Norway.

All the Almdales in this country are related to one another.
