Einar emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 16 with his older brother Earl. A short time later their brother John joined them. They decided their last name Pettersen was too common in America, so they changed it to Almdale, the name of their Alm Farm back in Stange, Norway where they all were born.

All the Almdales in this country are related to one another, having been descended from these three brothers.
