Mrs. Eva Dutcher Dies; Was First Woman Sheriff
Wautoma- The first elected woman sheriff in Wisconsin, Mrs. Ellery (Eva) Dutcher, 75, of 107 W. Main St., died Sunday at Wild Rose Hospital following a long illness.
Mrs. Dutcher was born Oct 11, 1896, in the Town of Deerfield, Waushara Co, and was married April 16, 1914, in Wautoma. She was educated in Wautoma public schools and was elected sheriff in 1944 and served in that office until 1964.
She was member of Grace United Methodist Church, Wautoma Chapter 198, Order of Eastern Star and the Rebecca Lodge, which she served as noble grand.
Mrs. Dutcher is survived by her widower; one son, Howard, Wautoma; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Judy) Ellis, Appleton; Mrs. Bernadyne Edwards, Wautoma, and Mrs. Darwin (Lucille) Krentz, Ripon; a brother, Harold Johannes, Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Tim Keliher, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Edna Bray, Wautoma; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Grace United Methodist Church, the Revs. Norman Silvester and John Bartel officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Patterson Funeral Home, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation at the church is from noon until the time of services Tuesday. Burial will be in Wautoma Union Cemetery.
