He met and fell in love with Miss Elizabeth Kersey. They were married on December 7, 1848, in Monticello, Jefferson County, Florida. Elizabeth was born on April 20, 1831 in Georgia.

Chestnut, at the age of 35, enlisted at Starke on September 3, 1861 as a private in Company A, 10th Florida Infantry, Confederate States Army. He was dropped after December 1864. He and his unit fought at the Battle of Olustee in Lake City on February 20, 1864. He was wounded in the face.
In 1870 the family resided in the community of Sanderson in Clay County. Chestnut, age 40, worked on the family farm with his sons, Jesse and George. William, age 16 is not listed as working and possible could have been ill. They had personal property valued at $200. Elizabeth kept the house and cared for Eliza, William, Louisa, Jesse, George, Susan and Elizabeth.
By 1880 the family relocated to the community of Cross Roads in Bradford County. Chestnut, age 52, farmed for a living. Elizabeth kept the house and cared for Luranna, Jessie A., Susan, Elizabeth and Noah. George and Jessie resided and worked on a neighboring farm owned by Hiram Alderman. Also, Jessie was reported as residing with his parents. Perhaps when asked for information by the census taker, the informant gave both address, which was erroneous. The census taker should have only reported one residence. There are noticeable spaces in the children's ages which lead to an assumption of preadolescence deaths.
Tragedy struck the Chestnut family in 1899. Elizabeth, age 51, passed away on September 4, 1899 and was laid to rest in Clay County.
By 1900 the family resided in the community of Melrose of Clay County. James, age 71 and a recent widower, farmed his land. Lizzie and Noah resided with their father. Noah was employed as a teamster.
Between 1900 and 1903 Chestnut relocated to Polk County, settling in the community of Kathleen in Lakeland. On September 10, 1903 Chestnut, age 76, passed away and was laid to rest at Griffin Cemetery. The cemetery is located on Sleepy Hill Road, Section 34, Township 27, Range 23. Over the decades the cemetery has been called by various names to include Galloway cemetery and Sleepy Hill cemetery. James Chestnut's headstone is engraved as "James Chestnut."
