A review of his Civil War Pension Files reveals that he enlisted in the service in 1862 at Vigo County, Indiana, Company B, 71st Regt. Indiana Infantry; however was discharged when it was discovered that he was a minor. In 1863 he enlisted again at Cincinnati, Ohio into Company 8, Independent Sharp Shooters Ohio Volunteers and was honorably discharged in 1865. In the publication, A Complete Roster by Township of Greene County Ohio Soldiers in the Civil War; compiled by George F. Robinson, Xenia, Ohio 1895, a listing shows: Miami Township - Grinnell, James M. Private, Company (left blank), 8th Regiment Sharp Shooters.
NOTE: the first company he tried to enlist to is the same company his brother George was enlisted in. Also among his pension papers is the Prisoner of War Memorandum that reveals James had been a prisoner of war and had to serve time for desertion.
According to his Civil War Pension Application, after the war he was a railroad employee and moved about. He is found in White County, Indiana, where he marries his second wife. He is mentioned in the 1875 diary of his brother Noah as visiting frequently from Logansport, Indiana. By 1880 census, they are living in Lafayette, Indiana.
