When young, he was called "Westley" as his father was called John. A personal bible entry uses Westley Branan. When he died, he was known as Rev. J.W. Brannon.

He lived in Newton Co, GA in 1850.
He died on Sept 9th in Pike Co, GA at the home of his son T.C. Branan and was buried Sep 10th.

He was a Congregational Methodist minister for 40 years, according to his obituary, which also mentioned his extraordinary soft and musical singing voice. His favorite song had in the chorus - "Say Brethren will you meet me?" and he most often sang "The way worn traveler."

He served in the CSA, Co F 2nd Regt. He was 48 when he joined.
