Born in Collumton, Devon, England to John and Hannah Maria Bromfield. John helped his father on their 100 acres of farm land.

John had two sisters, Maria and Mary. He married his wife Louisa Mifflin in the early to mid 1850's. After marriage, while raising four sons, he continued working as a farm laborer. John and Louisa's first born, Mary Maria was raised by and lived with John's parents until their death. The reason is unknown.

John aka George Bromfield arrived to the United States on the 21 Apr 1890 with his wife and their son and daughter, Henry aka Harry and Mary with their families; meeting two more sons Thomas and Samuel, who were already established in Wilkes-Barre PA. for a few years. John/George moved in with his son Thomas and lived the remainder of his years there at r 29 Sheridan St in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. It is unknown if their eldest son John Edward ever came to the United States.

John lost his battle with pneumonia at the age of 63 and was buried 28 Mar 1892. His son Thomas of Wilkes-Barre made the funeral arrangements.
