Following the end of the War Between the States, William Wilson returned to Newton County, Texas, where on April 4, 1867, he married a young widow, Nancy Stewart Bevil, widow of John Bevil, who was a fallen Confederate veteran who died of wounds in a Georgia hospital during the war.
William Wilson was a school teacher, and later served as postmaster for the city of Newton, Texas. He also served as tax assessor and county judge for Newton County, Texas.
