The LaFayette Sun" - October 11, 1916:

Two Men Dead As Result of Tragedy.

Two men are dead as a result of a tragedy enacted on the public highway near New Hope Church, in the northern part of the county, last Wednesday night. Mr. Simeon Estes, accompanied by several members of his family, were returning from a neighbor’s house, when they were met by Mr. William Ponder and his son, Mr. Lumus Ponder. It is alleged that the Ponders attacked Mr. Estes and in the difficulty which ensued Mr. William Ponder was shot in the head and Mr. Lumus Ponder received several shots in the breast. The father died within thirty minutes, while the son lived several hours, but without regaining consciousness.
Mr. Estes came to LaFayette early Thursday morning and surrendered to the sheriff. He was given a preliminary hearing before Judge Robinson last Saturday mornings and was discharged.
