Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862. Promoted to Captain and commander of the company on November 15, 1863 (replacing the discharged Captain Martin Dolan), he actually spent very little time with his nominal command, due to the fact he was detailed as an aide to the regiment's Division Headquarters in the Spring of 1863. Serving in that capacity for over a year, he was tabbed in May 1864 to serve as an aide to II Corps commander Major General Winfield S. Hancock. Brevetted Major, US Volunteers on December 2, 1864, and Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. on May 14, 1865, he was transferred out of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, and into 21st United States Volunteer Infantry (which allowed 2nd Lieutenant Jacob Breon, who had actually commanded Company F, to receive a well-deserved promotion).
