Ariel Case, s. of Sgt. Benjamin Case and Abigail Richardson, b. Mar, 17, 1778 in Coventry, Conn. He d. Oct. 4, 1854 at Rootstown, OH (Æ 77). He was twice married and had children by both wives with a resulting ironic twist.

Two unrelated Case families were early settlers of Connecticut. Beginning in 1656 John Case and Sarah Spencer became the progenitors of the large Case family of greater Simsbury, Conn. In circa 1680 a different John Case m. Desire Manter in Tisbury, Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard), Mass. Their son Benjamin Case, b. at Tisbury Dec. 4, 1703, removed from Tisbury and m. Mary Manning on Apr. 25, 1728 in Windham, Conn. They settled and raised their family in adjoining Mansfield, Conn. Their son Sgt. Benjamin Case, Jr., and his wife Abigail Richardson, resided in Coventry, Conn.'s north parish.

Unlike the town records of Simsbury, none of Sgt. Benjamin and Abigail's ten known Case children are found in the Coventry vital records, and church records for Coventry's North Parish do not exist until the early 1800s. The identity of the children, including the married names of the daughters, is only found in Sgt. Benjamin's 1794 Coventry will and 1804 distribution of his estate. The ninth child was son Ariel.

By early 1799 (eldest child b. Nov 1799), Ariel Case of Coventry, Conn. m. his step-cousin Elizabeth "Betsey" Porter, youngest child of Deacon Jonathan Porter, Jr. by his 2nd wife Lydia Williams, b. of record in Coventry July 28, 1779. The first wife of Betsey's father was Lois Richardson, sister of Ariel's mother Abigail. Ariel and Betsey had eight known children, the five oldest born in Coventry and the last three during or soon after relocating to Rootstown, Portage County, Ohio. Betsey d. Apr. 23, 1825 at Rootstown, Æ 46.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gideon Case, s. of Jesse Case and Sarah Humphrey, and the 2nd great grandson of John Case and Sarah Spencer, was b. of record Feb. 26, 1779 in Simsbury, Conn. On June 16, 1806 at Granville, Massachusetts, Gideon then of Hartland, Conn. m. Persis Seward, daughter of John Seward and Ann Coe. Eight children were born of the marriage in Granby, Conn. On an unconfirmed date, Persis (Seward) Case's parents relocated to Rootstown, Portage County, OH where they both died. At an unconfirmed date before 1820, Dr. Gideon Case relocated to Ohio where he d. May 15, 1822 at Hudson Twp., then part of Portage County, but since 1840 part of west adjoining Summit County, OH.

On Oct. 5, 1825 of record at Rootstown, the widow Persis (Seward) Case m. as his second wife, Ariel Case formerly of Coventry, Conn. Two children were born of their marriage at Rootstown. Thus, by an ironic twist, their two children, whose surname began in 1680 at Tisbury, Mass. became the half siblings of the unrelated Case family that began in 1656 at Windsor, Conn. The problem is separating the descendants of the Ariel Case family from descendants of the Simsbury Conn. Case family who may have settled in Portage and adjoining counties of Ohio.

Ariel Case was one of three Corporals in the 2nd Co. (Capt. Frederick Caris), 2nd Batt., 2nd Regt., 4th Brigade of the Ohio Militia, which was in active service from Aug. 24th to Sept. 1st, 1812 (History of Portage County, OH.)
