David Woodruff Candee sometimes referred to as David Willis Candee. The Candee Bible never spells out what the W. stands for, but Edwin L. Scofield's genealogy stated his middle name was Woodruff, after his grandfather, David Woodruff. When David was young, his father, Nehemiah Candee, moved to Galway, Saratoga County, New York. David taught school when he was 16. He settled at Hagaman's Mills. He was also a clerk and then later a partner in a store, and held offices as a Justice of the Peace and Postmaster. He was a member of the New York Legislature and a Presbyterian.

David's first wife, Elizabeth Ostrom, was a granddaughter of Revolutionary Captain Joseph Hageman. (See page158 'New York in the Revolution as Colony and State') According to C.C. Baldwin's The Candee Genealogy, her grandfather was a captain under George Washington. David, too was in the military. He became a Captain of Light infantry and fought in the Battle of Plattsburg in the War of 1812.

After the death of his first wife, David Candee married Charity Ostrom, the sister of Elizabeth Ostrom. She is buried with him in the Hagaman Mills Cemetery.

Esther Candee b. 23 Jan 1809
