Joseph, Sarah and children, including several married daughters and families, along with Joseph's brothers, Alexander and James, sister, Rebecca, and her husband, William McGonagill, came to Texas in a wagon caravan, arriving on 12/24/1851 at Lockhart, the county seat of Caldwell County, TX.

He bought land along the San Marcos River, built his first home along the river, later a larger home overlooking his farm. At the time of his death, he had fourteen hundred and ninety acres of good farming land and he also raised livestock. His farm was a mile or so just outside Martindale. He and wife Sarah are buried in the well kept Humphreys Family Cemetery. There are over two hundred relatives buried there, more added year after year.

From Carl Humphreys study of this family: "After moving from Marion Co., AL, to Mississippi in the late 1830s, the Joseph Humphreys family moved to Texas with two of his brothers, Alexander and James and a sister Rebecca. They arrived at the San Marcos River in a wagon caravan on Christmas Eve 1851. Joseph bought some land along the San Marcos River. At the time of Joseph's death he had fourteen hundred and ninety acres of good farming and ranching land. His land was a mile or so just outside Martindale, TX."
