Naomi was born in Ozark County on July 28, 1930, the daughter of the Rev. Charlie and Emma Turner. She grew up on a farm which her dad homesteaded and she always loved the farm lifestyle.
She married Clifford Walker and they lived on a small farm east of Ava until his health started failing and they moved to town, much against Naomi's wishes. They continued to spend the weekends and holidays at the farm and that is where her heart remained.
Naomi was a member of the Southern Baptist Church of Ava.
She lost her husband, Clifford six years ago after a long illness and 60 years of marriage.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue, and husband, Roy Byerley, of Rogersville; and a grandson, Matthew Walker Byerley and wife, Marissa, of Rogersville.
She was blessed to have two grandsons, Jason Lee Byerley and Matthew Walker Byerley. She loved those boys so much and sewed all their clothes when they were little fellows, and always cooked their requested recipes, like chicken and dumplings. When they grew up and had Jeeps and trucks, they would ask Granny to make seat covers and she would sew them however they wanted.
She lost Jason 10 years ago but he left her a beautiful great-granddaughter, Emiley Elizabeth Byerley, of Nixa, Mo.
Naomi is also survived by her sister, Loraine Barber and husband, Ed, of Conway, Ark.; and a brother, Trellis Turner, of Kansas City, Mo.
She loved to cook and sew. She made wedding dresses and sewed for the entire town of Ava. Her German chocolate cakes that she made from scratch for family and friends at Christmas were a tradition.
She had been a caregiver for Oxford Home Health for 25 years. She entered the healthcare center 10 months ago and never a day went by that folks visiting others, or workers, would not say, "Mrs. Walker took care of my parents or grandparents," or others would say, "She made all of my clothes, even cheerleader's outfit."
Over two years ago a special little angel came into Naomi and Sue's life. This little lady is Carol Allen. She came to her house every evening and made her dinner. She has continued going to the nursing home every evening and taking her outside every day the sun was shining. She has brought much happiness into Naomi's life and we appreciate and love her so much.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Tom Maples officiating. Visitation from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery at Rogersville. Memorials may be made to Ava Southern Baptist Church or Gideons.
