TEXHOMA, Okla. - George Glenn Freeman Sr., 89, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with Dane Lemmons officiating. Burial will be in Texhoma Cemetery by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home.

Mr. Freeman was born July 3, 1912, at Texhoma, to Carl and Bessie Berry Freeman. He was raised in Texhoma and graduated from Texhoma High School with the Class of 1930. He then hopped a freight train to California. Later he returned home to play football at Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell. In 1935, president of his senior class, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics.

He coached basketball and taught school in Keyes where he met his future bride, who also taught in Keyes. He married Mary M. Viggo on Oct. 16, 1937, at Marshall, Texas, midway between Tioga, La., where Mary was teaching, and Krum, Texas, where George was teaching. They moved to Los Angeles in 1939 where he worked as a delivery man for Helms Bakery. After Pearl Harbor, he worked as a welder in the shipyards. In August 1945, he moved his family back to the Texas Panhandle to teach school in Dumas.

He moved back to Texhoma in 1947 where he began farming. He was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church. He served as mayor of Texhoma and as president of Texas County Water Board. He loved to entertain grandchildren, children, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and strangers with his many interesting stories about all his adventures. He will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Carlton Freeman; two brothers, Ray Freeman and Bill Freeman; and a sister, Faye Freeman Richmond.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marilyn Jean Cluck and husband Charles of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Georgia Ann Pearcy and husband Robert of Owasso, Okla.; a son, George Freeman Jr. and wife Jean of Texhoma; a brother, Jerry Freeman and wife Reba of Texhoma; a sister-in-law, Joy Freeman of Guymon; an aunt, Hazel Roberts of Keyes; grandchildren; Eric Cluck of Atlanta, Rob Cluck and wife Vanessa Cluck Dwyer of Orlando, Fla., Lance Pearcy and wife Charla of Owasso, Dan Pearcy and wife Robynn Pearcy Johnson of Richwood, Texas, Robert Glen Freeman and Josh Freeman and wife Carrie, all of Texhoma, and Mark Freeman of Niwot, Colo.; two great-grandchildren, Grant Glen Freeman and D.J. Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be to Texhoma First United Methodist Church, Texhoma Cemetery or a favorite charity.
