Shirley was the daughter to Kathleen and Douglas (Norman) Barlow, and had one sister and two brothers. She married twice, producing one son and one daughter in the first marriage, and three sons in her second marriage. She was also a proud grandmother. Shirley worked for the Leicester City Council for over 25 years, before retiring in late November 2009. She passed away suddenly aged 62, due to a blood clot.
