Funeral services will be held for Mickey Carter, 70, of Hagerman, NM at 10am Monday, February 4, 2013 at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel with Brett Shangraw officiating. Interment will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM on Tuesday at 3pm. He went home on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013. Michael was born on Friday, November 13, 1942 to Jesse Carter and Sarah Remsburg Carter in Hayward, California. He served in the United States Army and did a tour in Vietnam in 1968 -1969, where he received two purple hearts. He was a life member of the VFW, DAV, American Legion, and NRA, and a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart, Loyal Order of Moose, 2nd Amendment Foundation, American Hunting Association, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Mickey met Doe in 1974 and fell in love at first sight. The moment he met her he knew she was "the one". They were married within six weeks and he moved her and their two boys to Alaska, then to Washington, and eventually settled in Hagerman in 1976 when Doe was pregnant with Michelle. He went to work for Buck Pirtle and Barney Green as Forman running Hay Cubers where he employed every member of his family and all his friends for twenty years.
He loved hunting and fishing, welding, cooking for hundreds of people at his famous get-togethers, and could grow massive gardens. He was very patriotic and proud of his country. He taught his children that freedom is never free, to fight for what is right, and to never back down. He would drop whatever he was doing to help a friend in need, and never wanted or expected anything in return. There was rarely a time when he didn't have someone extra staying in his house because they needed a place to stay, and at Christmas and Thanksgiving he would go around and pick up those who otherwise would be alone, and bring them home to have dinner with his family. He included his family in everything he did. He taught his children how to do things right the first time and never accepted less than their best.
Once he retired, he enjoyed spending quality time with Doe, traveling, getting together with friends, and helping raise his grandkids which he cherished. The friends he had he considered family and always treated them as such. He had a hard tongue and a soft heart and loved to make people laugh. If you made the mistake of letting him know how to get to you, you were in trouble, because he would harass you every chance he could get. He could get away with almost anything with his crooked smile and innocent look. He was the leader of the family and held on as long as he could to make sure they would all be okay.
Michael is survived by his wife of 38 years, Doreen (Doe) Carter of the family home in Hagerman; his father- in-law Lucky Warren of Hagerman; his son Shayne Carter and his wife Wendy of Germany; his son Shawn Carter of Hagerman; his daughter Michelle Hudson and her husband Jason of Capitan; his brother Pat Carter of CA; his chosen brother Sam Huerta of CA, two sisters, Linda DeLacy and Darcy Lawson of CA; his sister-in-law, Bonnie Warren of Del Rio, TX; his grandsons: Eric Carter, Johnathan Carter, Chance Carter, Derrick Hudson, Anthony Burge and Terry Burge; his granddaughters: Shantel Carter, Sarah Booher, Sunshine Carter, Michaela Hudson, Shelby Carter and Iris Losoya; one great-granddaughter, Zoie Speaker and one more on the way.
