Sanford Williams was born Sunday, March 18, 1810 in Shenandoah County, Virginia (Today Warren County).

Sanford & friend John Manuel appeared in the Warren County Courthouse with bondsman David Campbell on 7 Aug 1837. David paid $150 Marriage Bond for Sanford to marry Sophia Curry on that day.

Sanford was a farmer & laborer most of his life but never owned his own land. He couldn't read or write. He traveled to Columbus, Ohio for business; probably for his employer in the year of 1838. His trip took place the week of March 28, 1838 when he lost his wallet. He placed a $5 Reward in the Ohio Statesman Newspaper stating he "Lost on the 28th inst. between the first gate north of Columbus & Worthington, on the Sandusky and Columbus Turnpike Road, a small leather Pocket wallet, containing, one five dollar post note on the Clinton Bank of Columbus, a three dollar Kirtland note, and some other change not particularly recollected, in all $19 50 - It also contained a note of hand. The above reward of $5 will be given to any person who will return the pocket book and contents to the owner; or deposit the same at Col. Noble's Hotel, in Columbus, so that I can get it".

He appeared in tax rolls for personal property in 1838 in Warren County, Virginia with no description of ownership but in 1847 he is taxed for the ownership of a horse in Warren County, Virginia & 1848 he has no known taxable ownership. Sanford, Sophia & their families traveled by ox cart crossing the Shenandoah River & settling in Deerfield, Morgan County, Ohio by August of 1849. On their way to Ohio story has been told that they encountered the family of a former US President; possibly William H Harrison.

In 1860 at the age of 50 Sanford is living in Jackson Twp., Hancock County, Ohio.
