Caroline Ritter (1846-1876) had children with Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921). (b. 1846; Paris, France - d. January 3, 1876; Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA) She worked as a feather maker and died during childbirth.

Name:
Caroline Ritter, Carrie Ritter.

Mistress:
She appears to be the mistress of Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921). The "Charles Lindauer" in the 1870 census who was her husband was born in 1840 in Pennsylvania and he worked as a broker. Charles must be Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921) who was married to Anna Augusta Kershaw (1841-1931). It is possible that there are two Charles Lindauers that are closely related and of similar age, but it is more likely that Charles Frederick Lindauer had children with multiple women. He was involved in organized crime running an illegal lottery.

Children:
They had the following children: George Lindauer (1867-?); Charlotte Lindauer (1869-1894) Landers, aka Lottie Lindauer, who was buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn in the Arthur Oscar Moritz Lindauer gravesite; Clara Louise Lindauer (1871-?) aka Lulu Lindauer; Oscar Arthur Lindauer (1872-1948) aka Oskar Sorelt Lindauer; and Edwin Charles Lindauer (1874-?) aka John Edwin Lindauer, who was institutionalized in the Hudson County Insane Asylum in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Death:
She died as "Caroline Ritter" on January 3, 1876 at age 30 in Manhattan. Her death certificate was number 226089.

Children raised by Lindauers:
It appears that after her death, her children were raised by John Jacob Lindauer (1841-1888) and they appear in the 1880 census in his household. John died in 1888 and in the 1900 US census, Lulu Lindauer and Oscar Arthur Lindauer are living on their own at Pacific Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Borland hypothesis:
Kevin Borland believes as of 2008 that the "Charles Lindauer" who married Caroline Ritter is the same person as "John Jacob Lindauer" and that is why the children appear in his household listed as his children. He believes that Nellie is John's second wife. The problem with this hypothesis is that John Jacob Lindauer appears in the 1870 census, without any children, in a separate household from the Charles Lindauer that is married to Caroline.

Reasearch:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on March 1, 2005. Updated on October 22, 2009 with the Borland hypothesis. Updated on June 1, 2013 with her date of death from the New York City death index. Rewritten on April 3, 2014 to strengthen that she was a mistress and show Lulu Lindauer and Oscar Arthur Lindauer living on their own at Pacific Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1900.
