"ELSIE I. SMITH

Elise I. Coffield was born in Colorado on May 11, 1881, being the sixth child of James and Rosina Coffield. She crossed the silent river September 19, 1935, at The Dalles hospital following a brief illness, at the age of 54 years, 4 months and 8 days.

She came to the State of Washington with the parents in 1881 and lived continuously in Klickitat county since 1882.
She was a graduate of Klickitat Academy, a higher school of learning founded in Goldendale by Charles Timblin, and was a member of the graduating class of 1903 of that institution.
On September 25, 1905, she was married to Fred A. Smith, since which time she made her home in Goldendale. To this union four children were born: Mrs. Lucile Husted, Mrs. Adria L. Watson, Mrs. Doris G. Davenport and Miss Margery J. Smith.

She is survived by her husband Fred A. Smith, her four children above named and three young grandchildren who were beginning to learn of the love of their grandmother. Besides numerous nephews and nieces, she is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Louise J. Compton, Lomita, Calif.; John H. Coffield, Goldendale, Wash.; Mrs. Alice M. Johnson, George Coffield and Roy A. Coffield, all of Wishram, Wash.; Frank R. Coffield, Eagle Creek, Ore.; Mrs. Emma Pike, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Mrs. Mary J. Bath, Goldendale, Wash.; and Mrs. Eunice C. Elliott, Portland, Oregon.

She loved her home, her family and the community in which she lived, and was a devoted and faithful wife and mother. With a smile and a kind word for all, even during the times when life appeared dark, and with a generosity unequalled she quietly lived a life of happiness and won the respect and esteem of numerous friends both young and old - and before she departed on her long journey, when the light commenced to flicker and grow dim, and when death commenced to enshroud her in his dark mantle, that smile which was always hers, some how, still lingered and that soft kind word was spoken.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 23, 1935, from the Chapman Chapel, Rev. R.H. Allen, officiating. Mrs. Joel Abshier sang. Interment followed in the I.O.O.F. cemetery."
