He joined the U.S. Army (Union) on November 1, 1864 at Cumberland Gap,
Kentucky and was assigned to Company F., 2nd Regiment of the North
Carolina Mounted Infantry.

dispatches, his horse fell with him and injured his left leg so as to render it
entirely useless."
"His occupation has been doing nothing of any account as he is unable to
wear a shoe or walk without a crutch or great difficulty."
Joseph was honorably discharged on August 16,1865 with a pension.
