Helen Betts Maynard, age 90, of Murfreesboro died Tuesday, February 12, 2013. She was born on March 1, 1922 in Raleigh, NC to the late Dwight Fairfax and Dessie Moore Wellons Betts. She was also preceded in death by her husband James Thomas Maynard.

Mrs. Maynard was a 1942 graduate of Meredith College. She taught elementary school and Sunday school in Raleigh, NC and served as Editor of the social column for the Greensboro Daily News during World War II. She moved to Georgetown, SC in 1950, where she was a member of Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church (circa 1730) since 1950. She was President of the Women of the Church Auxiliary, participated Annual Prince George Plantation Tours, and taught Sunday School. From 1968 until 2001, Mrs. Maynard and her husband owned and operated Hopsewee Plantation, birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence, and preserved the integrity of the house and grounds which was opened to the public as a house museum in 1970

service will be held at the Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown, SC with interment following in Prince George Cemetery at a later date.
