Lillie Mae Nelson had three husbands. In 1908, at the age of 16, she married John Quincy Hamby with whom she had nine children. The children were Freeda, Edna, Bernice, Oliver, Albia, Winston (Mutt), George (Jeff), Thomas, and Hezekiah. John Quincy died in 1925 and Lillie remarried in 1927 to Esco Moss, with whom she had two children. The children were Melvin and Robert. The 1940 census lists Lillie Moss as married, living with Melvin and Robert, but no mention of Esco. It is not known what happened to Esco, but other evidence indicates that Lillie was married to James Carter by 1942. James' enlistment record lists his status as married as of his military enlistment date of 21 Nov 1942. Further, Hezekiah's 1945 draft card lists Lillie as Mrs James H Carter. There were no children as a result of this union.
