Michael J. Kistler was born in Pennsylvania and is a descendent of the large Kistler family in Kistler Valley, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Michael's family went to Adams Township, near Republic,Seneca County, Ohio and settled near Republic in the 1830's.

Michael came to Allen County, Indiana as a young man and bought a farmstead and built a large brick house in Perry Township on the Allen County-DeKalb County Line. He married Esther Ann Van Deusen, daughter of William and Elizabeth Sly Van Dusen of Brownhelm, Lorain County, Ohio. Michael and Esther had six children: Silas, Julia, Augustus(Gus), Mary (Lung), Rosie (Surfus) and Aanne Jane.
